![]() ![]() Because of the reduced engine braking, you must brake sooner and more progressively than in a manual car. To slow down, transfer your right foot from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal. However, you must remember that an automatic gear box does not respond as quickly as manual to easing off the gas, so the ability of the engine brake to slow the car is severely reduced. This is easier in an automatic than a manual car. When you reach this speed, ease back off the accelerator and the car will automatically return to normal drive and select the most appropriate gear. To activate kick-down you simply press down hard on the accelerator pedal and keep it fully pressed down until you reach your desired speed. This gives you a higher degree of acceleration than normal. This feature allows you to over-ride the automatic selection of gears and forces the transmission to stay in lower gears for longer. When driving an automatic, if you need to suddenly accelerate more quickly, for example when overtaking another vehicle, you can use the kick-down device. Because of this, when stationary with the engine ticking over, you must engage the brake pedal or the handbrake. The engine brake is less effective on an automatic, especially if engine tick over is set too fast.Īutomatics are deliberately designed to 'creep' forward without any pressure being applied to the accelerator pedal. If you need a sudden burst of acceleration, to perform an overtaking manoeuvre for example, then press the accelerator down to the floor as this will cause the transmission to automatically drop down to a lower gear giving you increased acceleration. However, you should use the parking brake to ensure the car is safely immobilized. When needing to stop briefly, at a traffic queue for example, you don't need to move the transmission out of Drive and into Park. This will prevent any confusion in an emergency. As with a manual car you should use your right foot to brake.Once in Drive the car will slowly move forwards, so make sure you have the foot brake engaged before switching to Drive. To do this, you will need to push in the security button mounted on the gear lever. To drive away you should move the lever from Park to Drive.Ensure the gear lever is in Park (P) and that your foot is firmly pressing the brake pedal before starting the engine, as most automatics will not start unless these precautions are taken. However, this general advice will prove useful and relevant to all systems: These have a manual gearshift, giving the driver control over gear selection, but no clutch pedal - the clutch is operated automatically every time a new gear is selected.Īutomatic and semi-automatic systems differ from car to car and you should always read the manual carefully before driving one. Semi-automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly popular. In such a situation the automatic transmission will try and change into a higher gear, however, for safety reasons, it is better to drive down a steep hill in a low gear, hence the manual override. Well, sometimes, the driver of an automatic will need to override the automatic system and select a low gear, i.e. Why, you may ask, are first and second gear available for the driver to select, this is an automatic after all. D - (drive) select when driving forward.N - (neutral) this is the same as neutral on a manual gearbox.P - (park) this locks the transmission and should only be selected when the vehicle is stationary.Nearly all automatic have a gear selector, which will usually include: Usually, an automatic will change to a higher gear as the road speed increase, and to a lower gear as it falls.Īn automatic transmission will also change down to a lower gear when going uphill, as the load on the engine increases. When the transmission is put into Drive (D) the car will automatically select the correct gear according to the load on the engine and the road speed. In an automatic car the gear change is made automatically, hence there is no clutch or gear stick. In a car with manual transmission the driver decides when to change gear and does so by pressing the clutch pedal down and then selecting the desired gear by moving the gear stick. In fact, the evolution of the automatic transmission is happening at such a pace they are likely to soon become the norm. However, automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and economical. automatic cars give less precise control over gear selection.Traditionally, driving an automatic car has never been as popular as driving a manual car. ![]() ![]() Select the preferred graphics processor and choose "High-performance NVIDIA processor.Select ntop.exe from the list of programs.GPU Clock Frequency This one is very important we are tracking the GPU clock frequency in real-time as we play. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I've prepared a little tutorial below:ġ. Turning on maximum performance mode locks the GPUs clock frequency at its maximum, in my case 1215MHz, unless of course the card is using too much power or is becoming overheated. I must have set the power management mode to prefer maximum preformance at some point in the past without realizing the implications.įixing the problem was as simple as adjusting the power management mode in the Nvidia Control Panel. Installing the update must have reset my Nvidia Control Panel Settings. This resulted in the 18fps that I was seeing. When I had SLI enabled, the usage of my GPUs was even lower, ~30%, and the clock frequency was throttled even lower. What I found was that while I was playing back and recording the replay, my GPUs clock frequency was not at its mximum of 1215MHz, instead it was getting throttled to something like 840MHz. This was irritating to say the least, so I investigated further. But, I was still getting frame rate drops down to the lower 20s despite my GPU and CPU usage being ~60% and ~50% respectively. My first thought was, since I use SLI, that WG broke SLI support again, so I tried disabling SLI while recording and this seemed to fix the problem (in retrospect this was not actually the problem). When 9.7 came along, I found that my replays would no longer record at 30fps, instead they would drop to 18 and lower while recording. You can honestly skip this part, but for those who are curious/bored.Īs some of you may know, I've been recording games and putting them on youtube and adding them to my thread in the Purple Poaster Replay Place. I started doing this in version 9.6, and I found that I could record games at 1080p at an unwavering 30fps with the game settings maxed out. This seems counter intuitive, "How can changing settings on my GPU help me with a CPU bottle-neck?" But, because your GPU isn't being used near the edge of its ability, your system may be throttling its frequency which could be limiting your FPS even further than the CPU bottleneck already was. Since this game is highly single threaded, that is likely a large portion of people. ![]() This will work especially well for people who are bottle-necked by their CPU. ![]() ![]() ![]() These characters include Krillin, Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, Android 18, Goten, and Kid Trunks. ![]() ![]() If they draw a circle on a map around the station where the radius of the circle is the determined distance to the earthquake, they know the earthquake lies somewhere on the circle. However, they can’t tell in what direction from the seismograph the earthquake was, only how far away it was. If you are close to the earthquake, the P and S wave will come one right after the other, but if you are far away, there will be more time between the two.īy looking at the amount of time between the P and S wave on a seismogram recorded on a seismograph, scientists can tell how far away the earthquake was from that location. Then the S waves follow and shake the ground also. The P waves travel faster and shake the ground where you are first. P waves are like the lightning, and S waves are like the thunder. S Waves cause the crustal material to move back and forth perpendicular to the direction they are travelling. P Waves alternately compress and stretch the crustal material parallel to the direction they are propagating. The further you are from the storm, the longer it will take between the lightning and the thunder. If you are close to the lightning, the thunder will boom right after the lightning, but if you are far away from the lightning, you can count several seconds before you hear the thunder. Light travels faster than sound, so during a thunderstorm you will first see the lightning and then you will hear the thunder. To understand how this works, let’s compare P and S waves to lightning and thunder. P waves are also faster than S waves, and this fact is what allows us to tell where an earthquake was. You learned how P & S waves each shake the ground in different ways as they travel through it. Seismograms come in handy for locating earthquakes too, and being able to see the P wave and the S wave is important. How can scientists tell where the earthquake happened? Scientists also talk about the intensity of shaking from an earthquake, and this varies depending on where you are during the earthquake. There is one magnitude for each earthquake. ![]() The size of the earthquake is called its magnitude. The length of the wiggle depends on the size of the fault, and the size of the wiggle depends on the amount of slip. A short wiggly line that doesn’t wiggle very much means a small earthquake, and a long wiggly line that wiggles a lot means a large earthquake. So how do they measure an earthquake? They use the seismogram recordings made on the seismographs at the surface of the earth to determine how large the earthquake was (figure 5). The size of an earthquake depends on the size of the fault and the amount of slip on the fault, but that’s not something scientists can simply measure with a measuring tape since faults are many kilometers deep beneath the earth’s surface. Finally, when the plate has moved far enough, the edges unstick on one of the faults and there is an earthquake.Īn example of a seismic wave with the P wave and S wave labeled. Since the edges of the plates are rough, they get stuck while the rest of the plate keeps moving. The plate boundaries are made up of many faults, and most of the earthquakes around the world occur on these faults. We call these puzzle pieces tectonic plates, and the edges of the plates are called the plate boundaries. The earth has four major layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. The crust and the top of the mantle make up a thin skin on the surface of our planet.īut this skin is not all in one piece – it is made up of many pieces like a puzzle covering the surface of the earth. Not only that, but these puzzle pieces keep slowly moving around, sliding past one another and bumping into each other. What causes earthquakes and where do they happen?Ī simplified cartoon of the crust (brown), mantle (orange), and core (liquid in light gray, solid in dark gray) of the earth. These are smaller earthquakes that occur afterwards in the same place as the mainshock. Mainshocks always have aftershocks that follow. The largest, main earthquake is called the mainshock. Scientists can’t tell that an earthquake is a foreshock until the larger earthquake happens. These are smaller earthquakes that happen in the same place as the larger earthquake that follows. The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane.
